In partnership with Zebstrong, we organized prison Olympic games which is a duplicate of the Olympic games taking place in Japan. The inmates were engaged in a variety of games including football, volleyball, tug of war, javelin, and athletics. During the event, we shared with the inmates the dangers of drug abuse and harmful use of alcohol and mental health awareness. Inmates and police officers need mental support as they go through tough situations in the prison environment. Stigma and discrimination are high among inmates. As per the deputy officer in charge of the prison, sporting activities reduce inmates’ misbehavior in prison as they would not want to be barred from participating in the activities.

We are happy to be part of the Bundesliga Youth Ambassadors Program that kicked off on 27 February, the program goal is to develop a group of 35 young adults aged 18-25 into self-asserted community leaders as part of a long-term commitment to grow football internationally.

  • The Bundesliga is training 35 Youth Ambassadors to use football as a tool for social change, 5 of those Youth Ambassadors are from Angaza Sports and Development Centre.
  • The 1.5-year program is developed for participants in partnership with TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, streetfootballworld and Transforming Young Stars of Africa
  • The Bundesliga Youth Ambassadors serve as educators and role-models within their communities
  • It focusses on several educational and social components, from personal development to communication for societal change, and collaborative work.

As Bundesliga Youth Ambassadors, they serve as role models and multipliers to bring about positive change in their communities. During the program, the young leaders are acquiring general football coaching capabilities and learning how to utilize the game as a tool to teach life skills and educate others on different challenges in daily life. They are influencers in their local communities and engage with their peers on social media through their shared passion for the Bundesliga

As part of a five-day kick-off event in Nairobi which started on 27 February, the young leaders joined training sessions led by TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, developed their interpersonal and life skills, and experienced the unique atmosphere of the Bundesliga games as part of an exclusive watch party on Matchday 24.

The Bundesliga is a league that always puts its fans first, bringing them together across all areas of life. The Youth Ambassador Program is an important part of the league’s unique philosophy to embrace the social dimension of football and convey the values and ideals of ‘Football as it’s meant to be’ to younger generations around the world. Since its kick-off in Kenya in February 2020, our 5 selected ambassadors and 1 mentor skills and knowledge in child-oriented football coaching through TSG Hoffenheim junior coaches, online self-paced activities.  Our five BUYA ambassadors have since been able to design a Covid-19 response project and reached 60 bodaboda riders and 210 young girls with mental health awareness messages, distributing hand sanitizers, informative reflectors, and sanitary pads as well as develop a Covid-19 awareness drill called the PROTECT THE PEOPLE drill.

Caroline Smith https://www.angazakenya.org/caroline-waithera/ Thu, 12 Aug 2021 10:02:25 +0000 https://www.angazakenya.org/?p=1094 I’m Caroline Smith, 2019 was the most transformative year in my life so far. I interacted with fellow youths in a leadership workshop in Kitale, Kenya, Uganda, and Lyon and learned a lot of leadership knowledge and skills.

I honestly have never had two whole weeks, 14 days, in a row in my life full of love, laughter, joy, and learning with people who I had never even met before. One of my favorite games was (See, Describe &draw) where people in a group were given different roles one would see the pictures and explain to the other person who would then describe to the one supposed to draw. I was placed in a group with a lady who didn’t speak English and I don’t speak Spanish but the language barrier and the fact that I was able to draw items described to me in Spanish and in gestures still surprise me.

I learned how different organizations from different countries work to better their communities. I was challenged and at the same time encouraged by street child United since I have a soft spot for street families. I got new friends who I still keep in touch with, from France, India, Ireland, Denmark, Czech, Pakistan, Austria, England. I learned that no matter who we are, we are equal and I have learned to treat everyone no matter where they come from, age, and abilities with equality and respect a big part of my heart is still in Lyon in the same event with the same people and I wouldn’t have wanted it any different …it was such a blessed way to turn a year older on the French soil, an experience forever in my heart.
